Our Story

We at Victoria Park Florist hold ourselves to the highest standards of customer satisfaction and offer an unconditional guarantee on everything you buy. Simply put, we will do whatever it takes to make you happy.

Dave and Margaret Pender are the owners of Victoria Park Florist and you will almost always find them at the shop. Here's their brief story: Dave grew up in Illinois until, at the age of 16, his parents took him to Africa when they decided to become missionaries in 1972 and he landed up as a very disgruntled teenager who would rather be enjoying the fruits of the student revolution just getting under way in the USA and instead found himself in a backwater village called Fort Victoria in Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe) with his hair cut short and wearing a school uniform complete with a tie, short pants and knee socks. However, his misery turned to joy when he met Margaret at Fort Victoria High School and she completely changed his perspective on the situation at hand.

Margaret grew up on a farm outside of town and, to attend school, used to ride in and out with the daily milk truck. Besides the dairy, they also grew commercial flowers on the farm, and Margaret's mother and grandmother were expert floral designers and taught little Margaret all the tricks of the trade. The farm was called "Victoria Park" after the park across the road from the house where Margaret's grandfather was born in London. Now you know how the florist got it's name. Margaret and Dave fell in love, married and were blessed with two lovely daughters, Melanie and Michelle. In 2004, after living for over 30 years in Africa, they decided to move to David's homeland and bought a florist (formally known as Flynts Flowers) here in the beautiful, friendly and progressive town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Over the years Margaret has developed an eclectic design style, constantly reaching out to explore new ways to bring flowers together into exciting and inspired creations. Many of our customers have learned the joy of discovering what will come when they ask her to do something different. As the florist has developed and expanded we have been fortunate to enlist the expert assistance of some very fine designers. Christina Amodei is tops among many fine flower artists at Victoria Park. She holds a diploma in agriculture from Central Carolina Community College, and has been a star in our design department since joining us in 2010. Anna, Carly and Asuka are our long term, part-time designers and have recently been joined by Gina and Donna, both of whom have previously owned their own florist, and Carla, Emily, Hannah and Marina all talented and developing their own special style. It's a large team all with a passion for flowers and a dedication to our customers. Interestingly almost all of our designers are artists in another field as well. Among them are ceramics, stained glass, painting, beadworking, mask making and singer/song writing. Creativity and inspiration follows many paths and we've found that the best artists are often excellent in more than one. Our goal is to offer you a friendly, customer oriented service in all aspects of floral design for all occasions. We also stock a nice range of high quality green and blooming plants and will make up fruit and snack baskets of any size or content.

Victoria Park Florist is proud to be a truly Independent” flower shop. By this we mean that we have no affiliation or obligation to any of the large internet companies that have taken over most of the floral industry. When you place an order through FTD, 1-800 Flowers, Teleflora, or any of the other internet pirates that spend millions of their ill gotten dollars on advertising and deceptive search engine placements to lure you into their clutches, you will find that up to 50% of your money is siphoned off before your order ever gets to the design table at one of their captive florists. We are not alone and gradually more and more florists are making the decision to throw off their chains and declare their own independence. To find the best florist just go to your favorite search engine, ask for florists in the town or zip code to which you wish flowers sent and then ignore the Ad placements at the top. (These are mostly pirates) Find the best rated florist and be sure they have a physical address in the area you want flowers. If you want help finding someone good in another town call us and we'll give you a free, unbiased recommendation. We believe that customers should deal directly with their florists the same way as you do with all your other service providers. When a customer calls and the first question they ask is Are you a florist actually located in Chapel Hill we love it because it means another person has learned the great advantage of dealing directly with their florist. Cut the internet pirates out of the loop and start getting real value for your flower dollars!
